Often repeated many many times, either uttered internally or externally. For instance : Oṃ Namaḥ Śivāya. The etymology means “tool of the mind”Mantra(s) are often excerpts from ancient sacred texts; they serve as a support for meditation. Swami Ramdas (1884 – 1963) is one of the spiritual masters who used the mantra : “OM SRI RAM JAI RAM JAI JAI RAM”.
