The questions below are the ones we are actually asked — at the door, by e-mail, after a first class. They are grouped by subject; the menu on the left takes you straight to yours.
Before you come and practise
I'm a beginner. Can I join?
Yes. The Ashtanga – Foundations classes are designed to introduce you progressively to the Primary Series while establishing the essential foundations of the practice.
Do I need to be flexible or athletic to get started?
No. Practice begins with your body exactly as it is, with its strengths, limitations and possibilities. Flexibility develops over time — it is not a prerequisite. What matters most is consistency and mindful attention.
Do I need to book a class?
You are welcome to join the next scheduled class — simply arrive a few minutes early to introduce yourself. If it is your first time, we recommend getting in touch beforehand, as this is often the best place to start.
How is your approach different from that of a typical yoga studio?
Our teaching combines the rigour of traditional Ashtanga Yoga with an in-depth understanding of the human body (anatomy, osteopathy and Traditional Chinese Medicine), as well as a philosophical approach to practice. This is a tradition of transmission, not a service.
How often should I practise each week?
One to three times a week, depending on your level, your availability and where you are in your practice. Your teacher will help you find the right rhythm — one that becomes sustainable without exhausting you.
The classes and the schedule
Do I need any prior experience to join a class?
No, none at all. The beginners' class is designed to start Ashtanga from scratch: we build the foundations of the first series, the ujjayi breath and the rhythm, step by step.
How does a first class unfold?
You're welcomed before we begin and walked through the flow, then you practise at your own pace. Even in a group, you receive individual adjustments.
What should I bring?
Comfortable clothing, water and, ideally, your own mat. Arrive a few minutes early and practise on a light stomach (2 to 3 hours after a meal).
Can I join if I already practise elsewhere?
Yes. What matters is your consistency: the teacher tailors the corrections to your practice and your body.
Seminars and journeys
What level do I need to join a retreat?
Regular practice is recommended to make the most of the immersion, but the guidance is always tailored to you. The stays in India suit practitioners who want to live Ashtanga close to its source; the Athens retreat also welcomes motivated beginners.
What does the price include?
The practice programme and the teaching. Travel, accommodation and meals are separate — they are detailed on the rates page and confirmed when you register.
How do I register?
Through the “Take part” button on each retreat: your request goes straight to the organiser of the stay, who will guide you from there.
How is the trip organised?
Dates, accommodation and formalities are confirmed when you register. Our articles “Preparing your trip”, “Where to stay” and “On the ground” already answer many questions.
The teacher training
Do I have to want to teach in order to enrol?
No. The course is open to anyone who wishes to deepen their personal journey. Some participants will never teach — and that is perfectly fine.
What level of practice is expected?
A regular practice of Ashtanga Yoga for at least two years — at the Institute or elsewhere. What is asked is the sincerity of the intention, not the starting level: the posture adapts to the body, everyone moves at their own pace.
I don't know the Institute — can I get a feel for it first?
Yes — that is even the recommended path. The Saturday and Sunday intensive mornings are open to everyone: come and practise once or twice, meet the teachers, then ask for a preliminary conversation.
What happens if I miss a weekend?
The training lives on regularity, but life happens. The teaching material for each session is provided digitally, and the spiral structure brings the foundations back around from year to year. Simply talk it over with the teachers.
Is the certificate recognised?
The content follows the European minimum syllabus for yoga teacher training (2,500 hours of formative work plus personal study over the cycle). The certificate attests to a path walked and assessed — we do not sell a diploma, we pass on a practice.
I live far away — how do I organise myself?
Many participants come from France or further afield. Sessions are grouped over three days to limit travel, and it is possible to arrive the evening before.
