Gopuram

(Sanskrit word, plural) is a term of the architecture of Hindu temples in South India. These are monumental pyramidal-shaped towers decorated in profusion with statues of deities and of other mythical and monster characters. The gateways of these temples are located below the towers. The gopuram can reach 60 m in height in certain Tamil Nadu temples. The temples usually own four gopuram, one for each cardinal point. But multiple enclosures have been built over the centuries, each enclosure having its own gopuram, smaller and smaller from outside (the most recent) to the inside (the most ancient).
