In India, dress is a mark of respect — for yourself and for the person you are with. Here is how to dress for a pleasant stay that respects both places and people.
Neat and covering clothing
Indians appreciate neat clothing. For women, avoid very short skirts, shorts, low necklines and vest tops; for men, short shorts are unsuitable, especially for visiting places of worship (Hindu, Jain, Sikh or Muslim). Covering up also protects from the sun and mosquitoes. You remove your shoes to enter places of worship (bring socks if you would rather not walk barefoot); do not wear leather to visit a family or Jain temples.
Shopping
You will find many shops (Kashmir shawls…) and rich Tamil fabric stalls: dhoti loincloths and “Madras” in shimmering colours.
