Ashtanga Yoga is a dynamic Yoga, where the postures follow one another in a fluid way (the vinyasa). The six series of postures are defined the same way: sun salutations, standing poses, then seated poses which include: forward bends, twists, then the ending poses: backbends, inverted poses, and finally integration(śavāsana).
1. The first control is “Mūla”, the pelvic floor, the base.
2. Thesecond control is “Uḍḍiyāna”, the abdominal ball.
3. The third control is (Ujjãyi Prāṇāyāma), the breath, the diaphragm.
In an Ashtanga Yoga session, one always begins with the sun salutations. Once the body is well warmed up, we begin the series of standing postures by breathing in the āsana(s), for 5 to 8 breaths Ujjãyi Prāṇāyāma “the breath of the ocean”. Then comes the series of sitting postures, etc.
Ashtanga Yoga, puts a lot of emphasis on the quality of the breathing, which is what will give rhythm to the movement. The inhalation leads to the beginning of a certain movement, and the exhalation to the beginning of another movement (even if we can sometimes stay for several breaths in a given posture). Breathing is sonorous, like the waves of the ocean, and rhythmic, which allows us to stay focused.
