Krishnamacharya \u2013 thanks to the patronage of the Maharajah of Mysore (well known for his philanthropy and spiritual faith) \u2013 discovered by chance, in the 1930s, in the university Library of Calcutta, an ancient manuscript written on palm leaves and entitled \u201cYoga Korunta\u201d. The author, a sage of ancient times, called himself \u201cVanama\u201d. Composed between 500 and 1500 BC, the document was excellently preserved. Also a specialist in ancient Sanskrit, Sri T. Krishnamacharya understood from the turn of certain phrases that it was part of a much older oral tradition (between 3000 and 4000 years BC).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1445\" style=\"width: 236px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1445\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1445\" src=\"https:\/\/yoga-ashtanga.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/T.-Krishnamacharya-226x300.jpg\" alt=\"Sri T. Krishnamacharya\" width=\"226\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1445\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sri T. Krishnamacharya<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Following this discovery, <strong>Sri T. Krishnamacharya<\/strong>, who taught a different method of yoga, altered his teaching for the third time. He asked <strong>Sri K. Pattabhi Jois<\/strong> to devote himself exclusively to this method of original Yoga, called <strong>Yoga Korunta,<\/strong> and to pass it on.<\/p>\n<p><strong>From 1937 onwards, Pattabhi taught Yoga Korunta in Mysore, India.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Only in the late 1960s, <strong>Andr\u00e9 Van Lysebeth,<\/strong> the first teacher of European yoga, spends three months to study Yoga in India with <strong>Pattabhi.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Andr\u00e9 speaks of him and the quality of his training and popularizes him by publishing laudatory articles in the paper <b>\u00ab\u00a0<\/b><strong>YOGA\u00a0<b>\u00bb<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0which he edits.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1441\" style=\"width: 222px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/yoga-ashtanga.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/REVUE-Yoga.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1441\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1441\" src=\"https:\/\/yoga-ashtanga.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/REVUE-Yoga-212x300.jpg\" alt=\"La &quot;REVUE YOGA&quot;\" width=\"212\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1441\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">La &#8220;REVUE YOGA&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Around 1973, Americans participate in the demonstration of yoga by Manju (Pattabhi\u2019s son) in the ashram of Git\u0101nanda (near Pondicherry). id='gallery-1-1547'>\n\t\t\t\tNorman Allen\n\t\t\t\t<\/dd><\/dl><br style=\"clear: both\" \/>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p><strong>Pattabhi<\/strong> chose to use the term <strong>\u201cAshtanga\u201d<\/strong> for his school in reference to one of the six points of view of orthodox Indian philosophy,<strong> i.e. Yoga<\/strong>. The other points of view are: <strong>Ny\u0101ya, Vaisheshika, S\u0101\u1e43khya, M\u00eem\u00e2ms\u00e2, Ved\u0101nta.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The bible of Yoga, written by <strong>Pata\u00f1jali<\/strong>, is <strong>\u201cThe Yoga S\u016btra\u201d<\/strong> (a kind of synthesis of all the preceding knowledge).<\/p>\n<p>In the second chapter of this book, at verse <strong>(YS II-29)<\/strong> the foundations of the practice of yoga are being explained, the definition of which is <strong>\u201ca\u1e63\u1e6d\u0101\u1e45ga yoga\u201d.<\/strong> Thus, all the spiritual techniques referring to this book can be called <strong>a\u1e63\u1e6d\u0101\u1e45ga yoga.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This way the name of <strong>\u201cYoga Korunta\u201d<\/strong> was changed to <strong>\u201cAshtanga Yoga\u201d<\/strong>. Actually, the institute of Pattabhi was called <strong>\u201cAshtanga Yoga Research Institute of Mysore\u201d<\/strong>, which made the American students think that he taught a kind of Yoga called\u00a0<strong>\u201cAshtanga Yoga\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 1975, <strong>Nancy Gilgoff <\/strong>and<strong> David Williams<\/strong> invited <strong>Guruji <\/strong>and his son<strong> Manju<\/strong>, who thus set off on their first voyage to <strong>America<\/strong> in order to teach yoga.<strong> Manju stayed <\/strong>in the<strong> United States.<\/strong> This practice of Yoga spread rapidly throughout America from <strong>California<\/strong>, extending up to <strong>Hawaii,<\/strong> under the name of <strong>Ashtanga Yoga.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5492\" src=\"https:\/\/yoga-ashtanga.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/12\/les-livrets-de-jb-rishi-sur-lashtanga-yoga.jpg\" alt=\"Les livrets de JB Rishi sur l'Ashtanga Yoga\" width=\"850\" height=\"567\" srcset=\"https:\/\/yoga-ashtanga.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/12\/les-livrets-de-jb-rishi-sur-lashtanga-yoga.jpg 850w, https:\/\/yoga-ashtanga.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/12\/les-livrets-de-jb-rishi-sur-lashtanga-yoga-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In Europe, the first teachers to spread this method were called <strong>Jean-Pierre Radhu<\/strong> (Belgium), <strong>Gabriel Plessis<\/strong> (Paris, Rouen &#8211; 1972). With the permission of <strong>Guruji, Jean Bernard Rishi<\/strong> in Paris (France 1975) published leaflets on the sun salutations of Mysore and the standing postures (photos of Pattabhi in black and white). Having taught Ashtanga Yoga for several years, they all changed their methods of different reasons.
