This word means circle, community, according to the Buddhist tradition. It’s a visual medium used for meditation. Our Tibetan friends are used to build it with sand of different colors. After having been constructed, the sand mandala is “destroyed”, the sand is gathered for a spiritual offering to the Buddhas and the Universe. Mandalas are also a means for showing the transient nature of everything… The “Mandalas” are equivalent to the “Yantras” of the Hindu and Jain Indian traditions.
