Devanāgarī

is derived from “deva” which means deity, god, divine and “nāgarī”, a female name meaning ‘city, civilized’. The term “devanāgarī” could be translated as “The civilized writing of the Gods”. Devanāgarī is written horizontally from left to right. The Devanagari script is an abugida alphabet (consonant-vowel segments are written as forming one unit).
